Arctic Circle (1976)

Woodcut

Dale DeArmond

Edition of 35

Edition of A/P: 6 (Roman numerals)

Image size: 16 ¾" diameter

Features the face of Berry Woman, and many of the animals she created shown in concentric circles – polar bear, seal, walrus, whale, sea otter. The face is based on a mask in the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka, Alaska, which DeArmond described as "the most beautiful mask I have ever seen."

The unlikely source of this idea was a Victorian plaque wreathed with flowers, fruits, and cherubim. Here, arctic animals were used instead. The mask in the center is the Eskimo Berry Woman who cares for all the animals.
