Progress kept marching and in 1935 a handsome bridge was built across the channel. So handsome a bridge that its designer won an engineering prize for its pleasing design. Later that same engineer designed the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. If you really look at the Douglas bridge you will see that its long, curving lines, old-fashioned now, and very harmonious and beautiful. There are plans to replace it someday soon with a new, wider, stronger, and by modern standards, more handsome bridge (text from 1973).
